What is Health Tourism?
Health tourism is the process where individuals travel to another country from their place of residence to utilize health and tourism opportunities for health preservation, improvement, or treatment of diseases. A person traveling for this purpose is referred to as a “health tourist.”
In the past, this term primarily referred to visits from less developed countries to health centers in developed countries. However, nowadays, the flow of international patients has shifted. Health tourists are now also traveling from developed countries to other countries for more affordable prices and alternative treatment options.
The most preferred clinical specialties by international patients include; Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, Medical Biochemistry, General Surgery, Dentistry, Orthopedics and Traumatology, Infectious Diseases, and Ear, Nose, and Throat.
To operate in the field of health tourism in Turkey, all institutions must obtain the “Health Tourism Authorization Certificate.”
Types of Health Tourism:
1. Medical Tourism: This refers to the process of traveling outside the country of residence for medical care.
2. Elderly Tourism (3rd Age Tourism): This involves the temporary stays of retirees or those approaching retirement who travel outside their residence for medical and leisure services offered by tourism businesses. It is also referred to as “Senior Tourism” or “Geriatric Tourism.”
3. Disability Tourism: This refers to tourism activities and travel undertaken by people with disabilities.
Additionally, the classification of international patients is made by the Ministry of Health as follows:
• Medical Tourist: Individuals who travel from their place of residence to seek medical care.
• Tourist Health Services Patient: Tourists who need emergency or unplanned healthcare services during their stay.
• Patients from Countries with Bilateral Health Agreements: Individuals from countries with bilateral health agreements with Turkey who travel for healthcare purposes.
• Patients from Countries with Social Security Agreements: Individuals coming to Turkey under social security agreements between countries to benefit from healthcare services.
